Tips For Keeping Your City Carpets Clean

If you live in a big city like New York, Chicago, or Washington D.C, you know that the weather can really wreak havoc on your carpets. People who live in America's biggest cities are usually walking or mass-transit fans, especially on the east coast. Tracking through a city in rainy and snowy conditions will inevitably lead to tracking everything you collect on the bottom of your shoes through the house and across your carpets! Here are some tips for keeping your city carpets clean and lasting longer.
-- Adopt a "no shoes" policy
Yes, it takes a lot of discipline on the part of both you as well as your children to remember to take your shoes off before entering the house or apartment. But once you get into the habit, shoe removal will become as natural and automatic as breathing. If you'd like, you may ask your guests to remove their shoes as well.
-- Vacuum: a lot!

It doesn't take long at all for dirt to makes it way down through the fibers of your beautiful carpet and become ground in, doing lots of damage to the integrity of your flooring in the process. Many city dwellers vacuum high- traffic areas on a daily basis as part of their regular chores. Lower-traffic areas can get by with a weekly going-over.

Methods of Carpet Care

One of the many chores that are done around the house includes the care and maintenance of carpets. This relatively intensive procedure should be done periodically to ensure that the carpets remain clean and in good condition. The job becomes a little bit more hectic when a carpet contains stains, spillages and pet droppings or urine.
Before embarking on any process of carpet care, one has to know exactly what type of carpet they are dealing with. Important features such as the material, color and quality of the carpet, determines the kind of maintenance to be administered.

It is important to vacuum carpets a minimum of once every week. If the area that one lives in is dusty or near a heavy traffic zone, vacuuming may need to be done more often because of the large amount of dust. During this process, special emphasis should be paid to the hard to reach areas, which are likely to have an accumulation of dirt and dust. These dust particles are gritty and they could lead to cuts and tears on carpets. Where possible, try as much as possible not to place any other furniture on top of carpets.

How To Repair Cigarette Burns In Carpet

Who do you hire to repair cigarette burns in carpet? A good carpet cleaner will usually be able to do it for you. On the other hand, why not fix them yourself? Here are the simple steps to take.

Light Cigarette Burns

If there isn't a hole, but just a surface burn, you are in luck. This repair can be an easy one. Just get a small pair of scissors and start snipping off the blackened or brown ends of the burnt fibers. If the damage isn't too deep, you may not even notice the small depression left. You can hide it further by trimming the tufts around the burn, so the spot blends into the surrounding area. If what is left is still too visible, you may want to try the method for repairing holes.

Cigarette Holes In Carpet

Unless you grab that lit cigarette within seconds after it drops, it will usually burn a hole in your carpet. What do you do then? To start with, you can improve the appearance of the spot by trimming away the burnt ends of the fibers, as described above. Of course, you are still left with a noticeable hole.

Homemade Carpet Cleaners

A clean and fresh carpet can lend a look of sophistication and elegance to your home. But this important part of home décor often looks worn out due to lack of proper care and maintenance, and this can ruin the beauty of your house. So proper cleaning and maintenance is very important and we often use expensive commercial cleaners to serve this purpose. Most of these cleaners contain many chemicals and some of them can be potentially harmful for the health of your children and pets. So it is not a bad idea to try some homemade carpet cleaners, which are equally effective in cleaning and removing odor from your carpet. Besides these, they are quite inexpensive and environmental friendly. So let's try these carpet cleaners that can be made from normal household products and can also be applied easily.

Homemade Carpet Cleaners

Vinegar and Water
Some of the most effective carpet cleaners are present right in our homes, but we aren't aware of them. Such a product is vinegar, that contains acetic acid for which it is ideal for cleaning as well removing bad odor from your carpet. For cleaning any kind of stain, just mix white vinegar with water to make a thick paste. Then apply this paste on the stain with a soft brush or sponge and let it dry completely. Once the vinegar and water paste has dried out completely, vacuum the carpet and you will notice that the stain will completely disappear. Vinegar can also be used for machine cleaning. Just add some vinegar and water into the machine for cleaning any type of carpet.

Vinegar and Detergent
White vinegar can be used in another way for carpet cleaning. Make a solution by using equal parts of white vinegar, a mild liquid detergent and warm or lukewarm water. Mix all the ingredients properly and then use a brush for application on the stained area of the carpet. Let it stay for sometime, after which it can be rinsed with a damp cloth. For tough stains, repeated application may be required.

Carpet is one of the most popular flooring options, but it does require daily care to ensure that it stays looking nice. Carpet care is something that should be done regularly to ensure that dirt and other debris does not ruin the surface or the underlying padding of the carpet.

Carpet Fleas - How To Kill Carpet Fleas For Good

In the past and still nowadays, carpeting is really common and is the most practical, stylish, and flexible selection of flooring out there, since it also accounts for a higher degree of all flooring purchases that are made each and every year. A lot of people prefer carpeting for their homes. It gives warmth, safety, and flexibility in just about any room. But, what if you're taking care of pets at home?

Most folks like to keep some pets at home whilst the pets do have fleas on their bodies. Fleas have been around for millions of years, bothering animals and the human race. You can encounter them upon pets, mammals, in carpetings, or couches, in addition to other family and farm goods. In a typical room, 5 percent of the fleas will be encountered on pets, 10 percent are in the form of flea cocoons in the carpetings, 35 percent in the stage of flea larvae and 50 percent are flea eggs, once more in the carpets.

Fleas are those pestering small blood-sucking pests because they come into your household clutching that outdoor dog or cat. Their bites could cause itchiness and red bumps, in addition to misery, for both your pet and you. Adult fleas spend their entire time riding on their hosts, which are generally your pets, and do not spend time hanging out in your carpetings or other fabric family items. Eggs, as well, are discovered on animals; the mature fleas lay their eggs in the hair or pelt of your pets. The phase at which fleas genuinely spend a lot of time in your carpeting is at the larval stage. Here, they feast on dry blood and some other matter left behind in areas where your loved pet lies down, including carpeting.

You know what will come about whenever there are fleas on your carpeting, whilst you and your family enjoy lying on the carpeting too, watching TV and even eating. They are not healthy for your family’s well being. You have to put work in to clean the carpeting and get rid of the fleas from it. I would like to share with you a few tips how to kill carpet fleas.

How To Repair Water Damage To Carpet

Water certainly isn't a carpet's best friend. Water damage to your carpet can be a danger to the health of everyone in the house or place of business. Before you decide if the carpet is salvageable you must first determine where the water came from so that you can evaluate whether the effort to restore it is really worth it.

If your carpet has been damaged by what the industry calls black water, this contains contaminants and untreated waste water, the carpet can't be salvaged and you must, for health purposes, dispose of the carpet in a safe manner. If it was ruined by black water it probably now contains viruses and bacteria that you don't want to be exposed to.

So, carpet water damage restoration should only take place when the damage has been caused by clean water. It is also safe to restore the carpet if it is damaged by gray water, which includes dish water, washing machine water or even toilet overflow water. In all cases the padding should be replaced and the old padding discarded.

What is important for restoration is to address the issue in a timely manner; as a wet carpet that remains wet for 12 hours or more can start to grow mold and cause serious health problems. If there's one cost you don't want to address it's the removal of mold from your home.

Carpet Care - Carpet Cleaning Tips to Help Keep Your Floors Looking Great!

Keeping the carpet clean in my house is one of my biggest challenges! Carpet care can be one of the most daunting tasks when it comes to house cleaning. However, using these carpet cleaning tips has helped me immensely. So, I thought I'd share them with you.
The first tip is to vacuum daily. Most carpet wear comes from dirt and oily soil attracts more of the same. Therefore, vacuuming often really helps to prolong the life of your carpet. If daily seems like too much for you then a good rule of thumb is to vacuum at least one time a week for each person who lives in your house.
Next be sure to treat stains quickly. Most stains can be removed with some method or product. But the longer the stain is allowed to chemically react with the carpet fibers the harder it will be to remove.
Do a spot test before using any kind of cleaner. All carpets are different and some react poorly to the acid or alkali in the cleaners. And the last thing you need is a permanent bleach stain or something that you can fix!

When treating a stain always start with the most mild product first. Don't use harsh chemicals unless you absolutely have to because they will break down the carpet fibers. Be sure to neutralize products with high acid or alkali content when you are finished.

Routine Carpet Cleaning Helps Decrease Allergens

Indoor air pollutants are a major cause of allergy symptoms among those who suffer from allergies. Not only that, but these irritants can have even worse effects on one's health. Unhealthy levels of contaminants can lead to a whole host of health troubles, including respiratory problems and asthma.
Studies have repeatedly shown that indoor air quality can be up to five times more harmful to your health than the air found outdoors. Considering that many people spend around 90% of their time indoors, this means that most of us are extremely vulnerable to these poor conditions. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that indoor air pollution is one of the top five most urgent environmental risks to the public.

Various studies have shown that household carpeting contains the second highest concentration of allergens in the household. Vacuuming alone removes only a small portion of these irritants. So what can you do to help protect yourself from these harmful conditions found in your own home? Regular carpet cleaning is the only way to significantly decrease the amount of dust mites, pollen, mold spores, mildew, pet dander, and other irritants found in your carpet.

Five Carpet Cleaning Tips For a Beautiful Home

One of the largest expenses homeowners can have when cleaning up their homes or considering a remodeling project is the carpet. With that in mind it is much easier and economical to learn a few carpet cleaning tips rather than facing the expense of replacing your carpeting.
1. Of course the most obvious tip for carpet care is vacuuming. Although this is obvious a lot of people fail to set a schedule for accomplishing this. Your schedule will depend on the traffic on your carpet and the presence of dirt factors. Carpets with pets on them will get dirty faster then those without. With this in mind determine how often you believe your carpets need vacuumed and set a schedule to do this without fail. Keep in mind most carpets will need at least a weekly vacuuming and twice weekly is better.
2. No matter how careful you are with your carpet sooner or later someone will spill something. This is best dealt with immediately. With a stain the longer it is allowed to sit the harder it will be to remove. Normally you should be able to gently blot the spot and clean it with a bit of warm water. If you have a spill that requires more than this, you will find a lot of products on the market to help you. I find that Resolve is one of the better products for removing stains from carpet. But what if you don't have any products on hand? You can mix water and vinegar and that will often work on a carpet stain.

3. The entrance to your home can make a big difference in how clean your carpet stays. If you put a foot scraper outside and make sure people wipe their feet prior to entering your home, it will help a lot in keeping your carpet looking good. You will also want to place a rug just inside the door for people to wipe their feet and leave their shoes at the door. Shoes carry dirt into the house and bare feet have oils on them. It is best to walk on carpet with clean socks.

The Benefits of Carpet - Cleaning Tips to Keep Their Beauty

One of the largest investments you make inside your home is what you choose for your flooring. The most common choice as a floor covering is carpeting and the reasons for their popularity are both practical and aesthetic. Unlike other types of flooring, carpet is a natural insulator, providing warmth in winter and keeping cool air trapped during summer months. It reduces the noise level by eliminating or muffling the clatter of different sounds. It is also soft underfoot, providing a comfortable walking surface and reducing fatigue.

The beauty of carpet is evident in the overwhelming selection of styles, patterns and colours in which it is offered. Before choosing a particular style you should consider how much use the areas to be carpeted will receive and whether you will be able to keep the carpet cleaner. It is always best to balance the elegance of your carpets with the areas they are to be used. Entrance-ways, halls and stairways should have carpets that will not show wear and tear because these areas are usually subject to heavy traffic and the carpet cleaning is generally more difficult. Rooms which are favorite play areas for children, such as family rooms, also take a lot of punishment, so make sure durability is a consideration.

Most people want their carpets to last long and look good throughout their home. In order to achieve this, you should take certain steps to ensure that your carpet looks good even after years and years of wear and tear. In order to extend the life of your carpet follow a few of these simple carpet cleaning tips.

Regular vacuuming is the most important thing to do if you want your carpet cleaner. Contrary to popular belief, regular vacuuming will extend and not decrease the life of your carpet. Carpet Cleaning - What You Don't Know

Carpet cleaning extends the life of your carpet - you probably knew that. Dirt in carpet acts like little knives, cutting the fibers as we walk on them. Keep it clean and you may get years of extra use from that carpet.
But what kind of cleaning should you do? How often should you get the carpet cleaned? What can you do to keep the cost down? Here are some answers.
Type Of Carpet Cleaning
"Dry cleaning" generally doesn't use water. One type uses a foam that is applied, dried, and vacuumed up. Another uses a damp sawdust-like material which is brushed into your carpet by a machine, where it adheres to the dirt. It is vacuumed up when dry. The most common dry cleaning method uses a large circular cotton bonnet which spins and presumably "mops up" the dirt.
How deeply these methods clean is debatable. Also, none of them involve rinsing your carpet when done, so they may leave residue. For these and other reasons, what is called "steam cleaning" is generally the best way. It is actually hot-water extraction, although a lot of steam is produced.
Skip the do-it-yourself units if you want the really hot water and high powered suction necessary to deeply clean the carpet. Hire a service that uses a "truck mount" unit. These systems force hot water into carpet under high pressure. The water and dirt is quickly sucked out.
Some advantages: High heat kills a lot of bacteria, fungus, mold, and dust mites - unlike dry cleaning methods. Little or no residue is left if done properly, meaning there won't be detergent in the fibers to attract dirt. The higher pressure and high powered vacuum action cleans deeper.
How Often?

Carpet cleaning as often as the cleaner says you should do it may not make sense. You'll have to use your own judgment here, because no two houses are exactly the same. You might comfortably make it two years between cleanings if you have no kids, no pets, and you remove your shoes when you enter the home. Some families need their carpet cleaned every four or five months.

Getting Started - Vacuum Cleaning Your Carpet

To always maintain the look, feel, and appearance of your home carpet you'll need to vacuum on a regular basis. If you are new to vacuuming, you can use these tips to help you keeping your home clean.

Before you start, you should always inspect the house area. Pick up any large objects that could cause your vacuum cleaner to clog up. Smaller objects are fine, just as long as they can pass through the vacuum hose. You should check the vacuum bag to ensure that it is not full. If it is full, you should empty it change it. A full bag cannot suck up much dirt, as the suction power will be greatly reduced due to the bag taking up a great space thus limiting the suction process.

You should always be on the lookout for straw, thread, and string as it can trap debris in the vacuum hose and result in a clog. These types of hazards are also bad for the agitators as well, as they can clog up the suction as well, or get tangled up in the agitators and cause more problem or damage to your vacuum set.

You should vacuum forward instead of going backwards. Going forward will get you do the job quicker and you won't wear your cord out near as fast. When going backwards, you also run the risk of running back over your cord, which is something you don't want to do. Be sure to overlap your strokes to ensure that you get out all of the dirt and the residue. You don't want to miss any of the carpet, which is why it is important that you overlap your strokes.

Carpets – care and maintenance

You may have noticed that while all carpets look great just after they're installed, after a few years of wear and tear, that will begin to change. Whether it's from stains, tears, or just general wear and tear on a carpet, you will start to notice signs of aging as your carpet gets older. However, this does not have to be the case! With proper carpet care and maintenance, you'll be able to keep your carpet looking newer for longer, and you'll even be able to prolong the lifetime of your carpet.

The most important things that you need to remember regarding carpet care are also the easiest things to do. First of all, you should clean up any spills as soon as they happen. This will reduce the chances of stains, and will also keep the spills from soaking too far into the carpet. You should also make sure that you vacuum regularly - at least once a week if you can manage it. That way, you'll be able to keep the dirt that gets tracked onto your carpet from getting ground too far into it. You will also reduce the mess that occurs when there are spills.

Cleaning Your Own Carpeting

Cleaning your own carpet can be a great way to save money. If not done properly however you can end up with quite a mess. This article will give you some tips on using a carpet cleaning rental on your home's carpets.
The first thing you need to do is find a good carpet cleaning machine. You can find them at most home improvement and grocery stores. Look for one in good condition that isn't too beat up or old. The older the machine, the weaker the vacuum and water pump probably is. Find a machine in good condition and also purchase the carpet cleaning shampoo that is sold with the machines. Do not even think about using dish soap or any other homemade concoction.
The first step, once you get the machine home is to thoroughly pre-vacuum your carpet. Do not overlook this step because soil is much easier to remove when it is dry. Go over the carpet in several different directions, taking your time.

The next step is where I will differ from the directions on the carpet cleaning machine. They usually want you to fill the machine with a shampoo solution. This means that you are rinsing with the solution and you will leave a lot of residue. Instead, mix the cleaning solution in a separate pump-up sprayer. You can find one gallon garden sprayers at any home improvement store. Now spray the carpet evenly with the cleaner. Do not over wet the carpet, spray the solution evenly and then let it dwell for 5 to 10 minutes. Dwell time will allow the solution to break down and absorb the soils.
